Kim Hyunjong, New Voyage
Kim Hyunjong's New Voyage is installed on the rooftop, a unique but overlooked space of the Korean Pavilion. Access to rooftop spaces are usually impossible or limited in national pavilions of the Giardini. New Voyage revitalizes the Korean Pavilion’s rooftop, originally conceived as an exhibition space, while urging unknown future possibilities. Instead of looking inward toward the Giardini, New Voyage is oriented outward, facing the Adriatic Sea. This positioning draws inspiration from the pavilion’s architectural form, which resembles a ship with sails set toward the sea. By reopening the space to visitors in tandem with the installation, the rooftop transforms itself into a space of hospitality, an observatory for all. New Voyage invites visitors to reconsider the pavilions’ relationship with their shared natural elements—the sky and the sea—that transcend national boundaries and connect the pavilions of the Giardini.
